the monster the monster
Stephen Bruner (Thundercat) is the genius jazz and rock bassist, vocalist, and co-producer of this quirky album. With his partner in crime Flying Lotus, Bruner concocts a gooey batch of bass heavy, funk, jazz and R&B inspired goodness. If the name sounds familiar, you’re probably recognizing him from his quick appearance in FlyLo’s latest album, Cosmogramma. This is one complex album that can not even begin to be digested unless full attention is paid to each track. The shifting rhythms, panning synths, changing chords, and casual atonality require you to consciously process everything you’re hearing into coherence. The songs are much too thick and angular to flow into your ears of their own accord; they don’t make sense unless you make sense of them yourself. I found this brain exercise to be refreshing and stimulating, and a welcome contrast from much of the easy-listening pop and ambience that I find myself listening to while driving or working. In a world where many (myself included) are moving towards minimalism, The Golden Age of Apocalypse serves as a great reminder of how beautiful a little complexity can be.Oh, and the track Walkin’, one of the most “simple” (it pains me to describe it as simple) of the album, is one of the catchiest, butteriest songs on the album. So Thundercat nails that aspect as well. The music video features a porn star, cats and Shia Labeouf (sort of), and is well worth watching. FlyLo and Thundercat are making funk/R&B for a new, more digital, generation.http://keepinmusicclassy.com

One of 2011's choice releases, TGAOA brings to mind a space-age galactic melt of Squarepusher bass funk, Prince's ace instrumental flourishes, a touch of Tortoise's slinky post-rock excursions, and tongue-in-cheek synth jams for late night soul searching. Well played, produced, arranged, and stylized, this Fly-Lo co-produced album goes the distance. Check!
